Falcon Ridge Wedding in Kelowna, Canada | Mallory+Dylan

Mallory and Dylan jumped into my car when I first met them. We were heading to shoot their engagement photos around Seymour. Both of them are avid outdoors people, and their energy is always so up beat. We hiked across mountain biking trails and through snow for the perfect light overlooking Vancouver, where Mallory had finally moved to just weeks beforehand...

Traveling anywhere for a destination wedding is always exciting. New places have always inspired my shooting—a fresh slice of the world to explore. Keegan contacted me last year to be their wedding photographer—he spent several years as the Canadian Embassy’s official photographer in Washington DC and met Kristin while living there. It’s always an honour to shoot for a fellow artist. Still, Philadelphia in January doesn’t ring off the tongue like a beach further south might in the winter months.

I’m so glad I was wrong.

Coal Harbour Wedding | Katie+Shad

Katie and Shad knew exactly where they wanted to have their wedding. When I sat down with them at a cafe in Coal Harbour, they knew that their hearts lived in the neighbourhood. They worked nearby, they had their first date at Top of Vancouver, a beautiful landmark in Vancouver, and their sailboat lived at a nearby pier. I love sailing, I grew up on small boats and was an instructor in my teens, and what I knew was that these two were a perfect match for me.

Strangers Walking By

Strangers Walking By
  • I love meeting new people. It’s a big part of being a photographer who works in events, and especially weddings—you meet new people every time you are shooting, and it’s much more fun to make friends and connect with those people, rather than treating each wedding as just another job.

So I wanted to expand that from my work, to my neighbourhood. Vancouver can be an insular place—a place where you might not really now your neighbours. I believe anything you can do to break those barriers down is good, and so I set up my portrait station on my front lawn.

Dog Mountain Engagement Photos | Dylan+Mallory

These two have been going back and forth between Calgary and Vancouver, and have finally settled here on the coast. They love mountain biking and exploring, so for their engagement photos here in Vancouver, we walked up and around some of the trails in Mt Fromme before a short hike through the snow to the lookout at Dog Mountain. It was well worth the miles on our shoes.
